During the amateur years of flat racing in Hong Kong, Jockey Club members could enrol in riding class at Beas River. Horse riding activities, including competitions and horse shows, became more popular at Beas River in the 1960s and 1970s with the growing number of student riders and the establishment of The Hong Kong Horse Society in 1973 by Major Anthony Grimshaw, a former riding instructor and manager at Beas River. The Society, renamed Hong Kong Equestrian Federation in 1999, is an affiliated member of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI).
