Pedder Street, looking south from Praya Central

The Clock Tower at the centre overlooked the Central District from 1863 for nearly 50 years. Pedder's Hill is at the back of the Tower, with Pedder Street running south to north ending at the Pedder's Wharf on the praya. The Harbour Master Office was established on this hill soon after the British had taken over Hong Kong. The hill, the street, as well as the wharf were all named after the first Harbour Master, Lieut. William Pedder, R. N. The building on the extreme left was once the office of Dent & Co., with the old Hong Kong Hotel at its back, facing Queen's Road whereas Jardine, Matheson & Co. is seen on the extreme right, with the second General Post Office located at the corner of Queen's Road and Pedder Street at its back. The buildings on Wyndham Street can be seen in the far distance.
