Area around Murray Parade Ground, Central District

The Murray Parade Ground was in the foreground. On the left is St. John's Cathedral completed in 1849. A chancel was added to the Cathedral in 1869. On the right is a four-storey building with colonnaded verandah, which was situated at 1 Battery Path. It had been used as the Russian Consul's office and subsequently the residence of Augustine Heard & Co.'s taipans. In 1915, it was bought by the French Mission and extensively rebuilt with a chapel added to the northwest corner. The former French Mission Building has become the premises of the Court of Final Appeal.
