Shek Kip Mei fire

At the end of 1953, a disastrous fire broke out in Shek Kip Mei squatter area. The fire swept through the widest area in the history of Hong Kong, making over 50,000 people homeless. Shek Kip Mei Estate, Hong Kong's first public housing estate, was built to settle the victims.
