Opening of Large Dockyards

Victoria Harbour teemed with sailing boats in the 1850s. As the performance of steamships improved, they gradually replaced sailing ships as the major means of ocean transportation. Taken in the 1890s, this photograph shows Whampoa Dock in Hung Hom on the far shore. No. 1 Dock of Whampoa Dock was inaugurated in 1888. The launching of the S.S.
