It spans the period from the 1911 Revolution to Dr Sun Yat-sen's death in 1925. Politically, it was a time when there were punitive expedition against Yuan Shi-kai and protection of the Constitution, when the country was torn apart by warlords, and when the Northern Expedition took place. In literature, the May Fourth Movement triggered the vernacular movement in Chinese writing. In art, Western style made an impact, and traditional Chinese painting was also reformed. With the growth of city life, the upsurge of cinema and popular music provided entertainment for the masses. The architecture of Shanghai, the most fashionable metropolis of its time, showed many window designs that merged traditional sculpture and western-style stained glass windows. This feature is used for this period.
