To further promote the art of Yixing craft overseas, supported by Dr K.S. Lo, the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware organised a touring exhibition of 118 Yixing ware to various cities in North America from 1990 to 1992. This exhibition introduced oversea visitors to the long tradition of tea drinking in China and to appreciate the art of pottery making in Yixing. It enjoyed overwhelming response in every city and many visitors who saw the elegant Ming and Qing teapots went to great lengths to collect purple clay teapots for practical use or art collection. All eyes were on Yixing pottery all of a sudden and the prices of these works rose markedly.
This exhibition featured a selection of 118 pieces of Yixing ware, including teapots, tea cups, figurines and objects for the scholars’ table dated from the Ming dynasty to the present day. Set of educational materials introducing the art of Chinese tea drinking and the making of Yixing tea ware were also included as supplementary exhibits. Exhibition locations and periods are as following:
