During the early days after Hong Kong was opened for foreign trade, a large Chinese population resided in Wellington Street and Lyndhurst Terrace in Central and Sheung Wan. This painting shows the living environment and everyday life of Chinese people at the time. Most residents were labourers such as coolies, sedan bearers and stone masons.
