Notice issued by Hong Kong Governor Sir John Francis Davis for acquisition of cultivated land
1844
Collection of Hong Kong Museum of History
The notice on display was issued in 1844 by Sir John Francis Davis, the second governor of Hong Kong for land acquisition. The colonial government paid farmers $30 per mu for acquiring cultivated land in Wong Nai Chung and So Kon Po. Many of the British citizens who moved into the area after the land acquisition was completed contracted diseases and died. This setback resulted in the government abandoning development plans for Wong Nai Chung. Years later, Tung Wah set up the Tung Wah Eastern Hospital in So Kon Po.
