In the 'Sketches of China and the Chinese', Auguste Borget describes: 'This part of the valley has only a narrow opening towards the seashore. In the middle of this little gorge stands a large mass of rock. On the summit they formed a little canal, and placing at each extremity a pipe formed of bamboo, have thus constructed an aqueduct to convey the water across the valley, and so fertilised places which, without such an expedient, had been condemned to eternal sterility.'
