Performances

For most Hong Kong people, the industrial products exhibition was more than an exhibition promoting local products. For the general public, the exhibition also provides an opportunity for enjoy some leisure activities and to meet the celebrity actors. Each year the exhibition organizes many different kinds of activities to entertain the spectators. For example, the exhibition invited celebrities such as Teresa Tang, Poon Sow Keng, Cheung De Lan and He Sau Lan, to give singing performances at the exhibition venue. In addition, the Kiangsu-Chekiang School band had been invited to give several musical performances at the exhibition. RTHK’s Lung Cheung Theatre Group Cantonese opera has also been invited to perform Cantonese operas. The Exhibition had over the years invited many other groups to give dance and acrobatics performances. Since the 4th Exhibition of Chinese Products (1940-1941), each exhibition was held around Christmas and Chinese New Year. The CMA arranged special performances as celebrations for these festivals. For example, secondary school students were invited to give music performances during Christmas. Lion and dragon dances were also performed to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Many radio and television stations joined the exhibition in order to promote their broadcasting services. They used the exhibition as an opportunity to bring their star actors to a closer meet with their fans at the exhibition venue. For example, Wu Fung and Lee Heung-Kam were present at Rediffusion TV’s Exhibition Night programme. Leung Sing Por and Lydia Shum both appeared at the “Enjoy Yourself Tonight” shows at the exhibition. The presence of these stars always attracted large crowds of visitors to the exhibitions, which created an atmosphere of carnavalistic joy.
