The story of the film was adapted from the novel The Smiling, Proud Wanderer by Jin Yong. Several scenes of Wang Yu (as Ling Hu Chung) fighting with sword can be seen in the trailer.

Cat VS Rat, released in Hong Kong on 30 September 1982, was directed by Lau Kar Leung and produced by Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) Limited. The story is adapted from The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants. Halfway through the trailer, there is a contest between Adam Cheng Shao Chiu (as Chan Chao, aka Zhan Zhao and "The Cat") and his sword against Alexander Fu Sheng (as Pai Yu-tang, aka Bai Yutang and "The Rat") and a nine-ring broadsword, where Adam Cheng elegantly manoeuvre his sword with the tassel swaying gracefully.
