The Golden Age
Among the various Chinese musical instruments, it is the qin of which Choi Chang-sau is particularly fond. Choi Chang-sau began grooming qin musicians under his tutelage in the early 1990s. The affection and affinity between Choi Chang-sau and his students is very strong; in addition to their teacher-student relationship, they consider themselves to be very good friends. All of Choi Chang-sau’s students play the qin. He has never advertised, as all those he agreed to teach were referred by qin musicians. Choi Chang-sau’s workshop not only embodies the transmission of qin making, it also recreates the environment and atmosphere of literati meetings in ancient times. His workshop brings together qin players of all ages and backgrounds, sharing discussions about the qin over a cup of tea. The workshop attracts qin enthusiasts from all over the world. During his class, Choi Chang-sau shines with the glow of a qin making guru as he turns wood into fine qins that emanate heavenly sounds. The cosy workshop is now a quiet sanctuary that transmits the cultural legacy of the qin.
