11th year of the reign of Guangxu, Qing dynasty (1885)
Collection of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals
In June 1885, heavy rains caused tributaries of the Xijiang and Beijiang in the Pearl River to overflow causing a destructive flood that claimed numerous lives in the Pearl River Delta. Over 200,000 people in the provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi were affected by the flooding respectively. At that time, Tung Wah Hospital raised over $100,000 for disaster relief. Zhang Zhidong, Viceroy of Guangdong and Guangxi, proposed to Qing emperor Guangxu the bestowment of this tablet upon Tung Wah. The four characters wan wu xian li mean "all benefit from charitable deeds". These words were inscribed on the tablet by an imperial scholar on Emperor Guangxu's order. The emperor's seal can be seen in the centre of the tablet above which a golden dragon head is featured radiating an aura of magnificence and grandeur.
