The tablet bearing the inscription shan yu ren tong (charity brings happiness to the giver) was bestowed upon Tung Wah by Republican President Feng Guozhang in 1918 in recognition of the hospital's generous efforts in providing relief for flood victims in North China in the autumn of 1917. At the time, heavy rain had caused serious flooding that affected nearly 1 million people in dozens of counties. Tung Wah Hospital made a generous donation to the campaign, which was well recognized with a tablet from President Feng Guozhang.
