Company Name: China Dyeing Holdings Ltd

Year of Founding: 1949

Mainstream Products: bleaching, dyeing and printing

Brief History:

China Dyeing Holdings Ltd was founded in 1949 by Cha Chi Ming. Cha moved from Shanghai to Hong Kong, and established China Dyeing Works Limited. The company's first factory was at 9 Miles of Castle Peak Road in Tsuen Wan, next to a large water pit. At that time the factory was only a small scale dyeing plant with 60 workers and a production of 500,000 yards per month. Its production was mainly for woven fabric bleaching and dyeing.

The company expanded its business in 1956 with a new plant opposite the original one across the pit. To connect the two, a bridge was built across the pit to facilitate transportation of cloth materials. Nowadays the pit has been covered and above it is Discovery Park and Tai Chung Road. New machines and facilities were added to the new plant, which saw output increased fourfold. The company was the first in Hong Kong with machines for continuous dyeing range, copper roller printing and automated flat screen printing, specializing in the process of bleaching, dyeing and printing of woven fabrics.

In 1960s, Cha Testiles Limited set up its vertical production process in west Africa, from cotton plantation, weaving, spinning to dyeing, and employed over 20,000 workers. China Dyeing Works continued to build plants in west African countries such as Nigeria and Ghana, and at the same time expanded its business in UK, USA and Indonesia. In 1964, China Dyeing Works built an extension of its Tsuen Wan plant. With the emerging market of synthetic fibers, the company expanded its production of blended fabrics, with products exported to international markets. In 1980, CDW Building, located on Castle Peak Road, Tsuen Wan, was completed.

In 1987, in order to prepare for the government's environmental protection policy which was implemented in mid 1990s, Cha had two separate plans for the future of the company, either to stay in Hong Kong, or move the plants to mainland China. At that time, China Dyeing Works applied for land in Yuen Long for building new facilities, but at the same time the company was also prepared to build plants in mainland China. The June 4th incident prompted Cha to maintain his business in Hong Kong. In 1992, the company's new facilities in Yuen Long started construction, with added sewage facilities to meet government requirement. In 1993, production began at the Yuen Long plant, which has a floor area of 48,000 square meters. At the same time, the company set up an office in Shanghai. The company also improved its business handling with clients in which sales representatives were sent to deal with clients in US or Europe, with fabrics tailor-made for its clients.

In 2010, China Dyeing Works' mainland factories started production, with cotton fields and cotton ginning facilities in Xinjiang. In 2011, a dyeing plant in Chongqing also started production.
