Qiushui (1)

This qin, named Qiushui, was made in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and was acquired by Ng Ying-wai in the 1990s. The photo shows the front of Qiushui in Zhongni style.

Accessories Mother-of-pearl inlay markers; Buffalo horn tuning pegs; Feet in the form of plum blossom
Lacquer Characteristics Top lacquered in black; bottom lacquered in black and chestnut layers. The body shows “bovine fur” and “water-ripple” crack patterns. The bottom of the forehead shows some evidence of a “cracked ice” pattern.
Inscription [Chinese inscription] 軫池下方篆書「秋水」
Collector's Note Qiushui was acquired in the 1990s. It was named by Mr Tung Wah-keung and inscribed by Mr Tong Chek-sing. It is said to emit a mild fragrance when playing it, which encourages qin students to learn the instrument in earnest.
