This is Pok Oi Village in Tung Tau Cottage Area. When Pok Oi Village was first built in 1950, there were 129 houses with a population of 930. Similar to many cottage areas, the village was built by some Christian voluntary organization. It was partly cleared in the early 1970s for the construction of Mei Tung Estate. The rest was finally demolished in the early 2000s to make way for public housing.
Tiu Keng Leng (Rennie’s Mill) Cottage Area was cleared in 1996 and redeveloped as part of the Tseung Kwan O New Town. A ship-breaking yard can be seen on the upper left hand side of the photo.
In the 1950s, a number of villages including cottage areas and ‘approved resettlements’ were built in the area between King’s Park and Ho Man Tin, including Chi Man Eastern, Central and Western Villages, Hill Village, Garmat Village, Man Wa Village, Po Man Village, Po Man North Village, Ho Man Tin New Village and Faith Hope Village. All the villages were demolished by the end of the 1960s. The present Ho Man Tin Estate, Oi Man Estate and Chun Man Court were built on the site of these settlements.
