In 1968, the radio drama unit of RTHK founded a Cantonese opera troupe called the Lung Cheung Opera Company. The troupe was established by the former Head of Chinese Programme Service, Chow Nai Yeung, and performed roadshows throughout Hong Kong. Besides making records for sale, the Company also made on-site audio recordings, which were delivered to the Hong Kong Government Office in London, for broadcasting to entertain overseas Chinese in the UK.
The Lung Cheung Opera Company operated as a non-profit troupe for 22 years and disbanded at the end of 1990, during the time the troupe gave regular performances totally over 1,500 with repertoires of nearly 500 numbers, playing an influential role in preserving traditional folk arts.
