Liangxiao Yin (Tune for a Pleasant Evening)

Liangxiao Yin first appeared in Yan Cheng’s Songxianguan Qinpu (Songxianguan Qin Handbook) from the Yushan School (1614). Short and relaxing in spirit, the melody alternates between plucked and gliding notes. Compared with earlier qin melodies, this piece places a stronger emphasis on the left hand techniques of “yin, nao, zhuo, zhu” in its expression. As such, this musical piece is exemplary of the qin melodies of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, characterised by “less plucked notes and more lingering tones”. This piece of music collected in Favourite Qin pieces of Guan Pinghu is played by Guan Pinghu (1897-1967).
