Broadcasting Studio
Located at 30 Broadcast Drive, Kowloon Tong, Broadcasting House was completed in 1969. Its broadcasting studios have retained their original designs, but its analogue equipment, such as turntables and other music players, microphones, and headphones, have progressively been upgraded to their digital counterparts.
Classic Radio Programmes
In the early days of Hong Kong, most people could not afford a television, so listening to the radio had become a cheap and convenient way for people to be entertained. Radio broadcasting has become an important part of our lives.
With its mission as a public service broadcaster, RTHK has, over the years, developed a series of classic programmes.
New Generation was the predecessor of RTHK Radio 2. Created by Chu Pui Hing and Raymond Ng Sek Fai in 1974, the programme has promoted popular culture and served as a cradle of "DJ idols".
RTHK is the pioneer of live public affairs phone-in programmes for radio listeners. It started with Late Call hosted by Franklin Wong in 1969, followed by An Hour with Eddie by Eddie Au Yeung in the 1970s. From the 1980s onwards, Talkabout, first hosted by Chu Pui Hing, has evolved into the 1990s and millennium.
To many people, Morning Suite signals the start of a new day. Since 1985, it has been, and still is, one of the longest-running radio programmes in Hong Kong, giving listeners news, entertainment and information.
Operation Santa Claus was first introduced in 1960 and has evolved into a project jointly organised by RTHK Radio 3 (the English Channel) and the South China Morning Post. Since 1988, this fund-raising drive has supported hundreds of charity projects and helped improve the quality of life of the under-privileged.
Solar Project, is a special programme held every summer by Radio Television Hong Kong from 1988 to 2018 to encourage young people to make good use of their spare time and develop their creativity.
Young Music Makers, was founded in the 1980s by RTHK Radio 4 (Classic Music Channel) to cultivate young musicians. Many famous musicians, such as Warren Mok, Colleen Lee Ka Ling and Rachel Cheung Wai Ching, have performed on this stage.
Community Involvement Broadcasting Service (CIBS) is offered and funded by RTHK as a platform to encourage local organisations and people to participate in the production of radio programmes to promote multiple views, cultural diversity and social inclusion.
Radio on TV was created as broadcasting technology developed and media began to converge. Since 2016, several of RTHK’s radio programmes have been simultaneously broadcast on RTHK TV31, including Talkabout, Accountability, Healthpedia, Investment Era, and Voices from the Hall.
All those classic radio programmes are memories of people’s younger days.
